Community Health Care
So far, we've provided 50 mosquito nets, and hundreds of inoculations and disease screenings for Namutumba residents.
When Ezra Uganda started, basic, immediate Abayudaya needs and our Jewish values inspired our efforts to support every health emergency we could, and there were many. We learned that even sending thousands of dollars annually for emergency care was not enough, but it did dramatically limit the potentially self-sustaining projects we could support.
The need for prevention — more effective and ultimately less expensive — was obvious. Purchase of more than four dozen mosquito nets with Ezra Uganda support helped reduce the incidence of malaria. In addition, disease screenings for Namutumba residents supporting prevention was vital. When Covid vaccines became available, Ezra Uganda sent money to vaccinate the entire community: Jews and non-Jews alike. NO ONE GOT COVID! By late 2025 the Board determined that though our past support for emergency care was invaluable, our current focus must be on preventive care.
We are now seeking funding to boost the entire village again, and keep the community healthy. Please choose this under donations!
Namutumba has had a hard time dealing with COVID-19. The pandemic has exacerbated food shortages and the need for cleaning and hygiene supplies. We have managed to raise more than $34k, which has paid for two doses of the COVID vaccine and a booster shot for every eligible person--Jews and non-Jews--in the village!
To the right are our photos of Namutumba's residents being vaccinated. Vaccinations took place at the Namutumba synagogue--built with funding from Ezra Uganda Assistance--for all villagers, including non-Jews.
